Imagine Us was commissioned by the Art Gallery at York University in Toronto and mobilized in direct response to sexual- and gender- based violence on university campuses. By co-opting the structures of various York University advertisements and popular poster sales, the project utilizes still- and moving-image portraits to turn densely populated public spaces into viewing galleries of direct connection to the issues. Part Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests and part Foucauldian panopticon, Imagine Us shifts the gaze back toward the institution, confronting publics with the realities of violence that are all too often tacitly supported by university policies.
